First day of SXSW Interactive 2012! Oh boy my brain day. I attended two sessions today: Get Smart! Hack Your Brain for Peak Performance & Your Brain on

MultitaskingGet Smart! Hack Your Brain for Peak Performance — #sxsw #brainhack

Daniel Wetmore Co-founder at Sheepdog Sciences Stanford University

Dave Asprey Biohacker & Entrepreneur The BulletProof Executive/Trend Micro

Megan Miller Program Director Bonnier R&D

Michael Scanlon Co-Founder & Chief Scientist Lumosity

The “quantified self” trend of tracking and tweaking physical performance is all the rage in Silicon Valley, especially among type-A data geeks and weekend-warriors hoping to gain an athletic edge. But the most interesting “body hacks” won’t just make you faster, stronger or leaner… they’ll actually improve your brain.

We’ll explain how to dramatically cut the time it takes to learn a new skill by writing critical information to your brain’s hard drive during sleep. You’ll learn how to grow relaxed and calm with the help of a heartbeat- and brainwave-syncing device. And we’ll explain how to feed your brain with the optimal nutrition for high-powered cognitive processing.

In this panel, you’ll get an overview of the current state of cognitive enhancement from Bonnier R&D technology researcher Megan Miller. Brain-hacker Dave Asprey will deliver a first-hand look at the fringes of self-experimentation. And you’ll find out how emerging software and biofeedback technologies are making it possible to improve sleep, cognition and memory from Stanford neuro-scientist Daniel Wetmore and Lumosity.com cofounder Michael Scanlon.

Your Brain on Multitasking — #sxsw #multitask

Adam Gazzaley Assoc Professor of Neurology, Physiology & Psychiatry University of California San Francisco

David Meyer Professor, Dept of Psychology University of Michigan Masters

We all have a zillion tasks that need to be done now. Does multitasking help you work more efficiently and productively? Or does it allow you to do lots of things poorly? Is it better to focus on one task at a time and then move on quickly to the next? What exactly does multitasking do to our brains? Do gender or age make a difference when it comes to multitasking? A panel of the country’s top experts on multitasking – neuroscientists, psychologists and a time-management pro – provide the latest findings on how to work more effectively while juggling multiple activities.

I couldn’t help to remember after these sessions a really fun game I used to play as a kid called Brain Quest. I loved those games but in my old age of 30, my brain has lacked some training. I downloaded Brain Trainer by luminosity.com and am fascinated to see how much training and quizzing I will have to do before I am smart. This is something that should be integrated into education at a young age but we shouldn’t loose focus of continually challenging our brains as we grow older and things are harder and harder to retain. Here’s to hacking my brain to a smarter me!

The multitasking session was hilarious. I very good friend has often warned me of the dangers of multitasking and yet I continue to multitask day in and day out. Work, shopping online, phone, iPad, twitter, facebook there are just so many things to stay caught up on. This session had me leaving with a new awareness of the dangers. So as the panelists challenged their audience I challenge you!

Say “Silk” 10 times
Now what do cows drink?!

-or-

Count and recite the alphabet at the same time 1A 2B 3C how far do you get?

All in all a great start to SXSW 2012 even with the cold rainy craziness!

WordPress is installed everything is all dandy but every time I save my post it would come up with a whitespace issue. What happened? Earlier I had edited the functions.php file with code that would leave the admin bar when users were not logged in and provide an easy way to get to the login screen.

So the problem I had was somehow some text or whitespace (spaces, newline) was inserted before the opening PHP tag or after the closing PHP tag in my theme’s functions.php file. There can’t be a single character before or after those tags.

Once I removed the extra whitespace everything was just dandy again!

So I found this beautiful theme that reflected the name of my site and had a pixi feeling to it as well. There was a big issue though. When I went to the site my admin bar disappeared. Back to the dashboard and it reappeared. Why wouldn’t it appear when I was on the site view?

So like I usually do I started to attack google with my question. After much searching I found that there was specific code that had to be within the theme. Within the theme, you must have:

<?php wp_footer(); ?>

usually directly before the </body> tag in footer.php

Marketers are acting like 17 year old boys trying to see how they can be intimate quickly with their customers. Don’t jump into bed with your users get intimate by building a relationship that will last.

Think of personalization as dialogue with users.

Personalization should be around data users chose to enter, not data or assumptions based on life events.
